The seven-member band BTS first released music in 2013 with their single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. Since their first release, the band has risen to fame in South Korea and beyond. The band has been recognized in a letter from South Korean president Moon Jae-in. Additionally, the members of BTS were the youngest people ever to receive the Order of Cultural Merit, also presented by Moon Jae-in. Internationally, BTS was the first K-Pop boy band to chart on the Billboard 100 and the first to reach the top 40 with their single “Mic Drop (Remix)”.
BTS draws musical inspiration from artists such as Eminem, Drake, Kanye West, and Post Malone. Lyrically, the band deals with the social issues of millennials and frankly addresses mental health issues such as depression. BTS’ direct and truthful lyrics have contributed to their resonance with the youth of South Korea and even outside of their home country. The band writes more than 90% of their own lyrics and they also co-produce most of their music.
