At a mere 1.69m (5”7), Lionel Messi, the tiny Argentinian, has taken the world by storm ever since his Barcelona debut in 2004. Since then he has molded and redefined the game of football in his image, with his brilliance on the pitch and had, along with Cristiano Ronaldo, dominated world football with no real competition for over a decade.
Messi is one of those rare athletes who simply by being on the pitch, involved in the action, affect the outcome of the game. And when they have the ball, you can sense the collective gasp of joy and anticipation – what will they do next?
Similar level superstars are few. The likes of NBA’s Steph Curry, or track and field’s Usain Bolt, and yes, Cristiano Ronaldo, come to mind. They have that extra something, that secret ingredient, that sets them apart from the rest of the pack.
His personal, as well as team, milestones, records and accomplishments are endless. We’d mention some of them but we don’t want to spoil (or help you with) the quiz above! 🙂
The greatest ever?
This debate will never cease. Is he better than Ronaldo right now? Maybe. Has he ever been? At some point for sure. There are arguments to be made on both sides.
But is he better than the great Maradona or Pele? In a game of not only ability, but legacy, personal achievements matter, but they’re simply not enough.
In that respect one title still eludes the Argentinian – the World Cup. Reports are uncertain about his participation in the 2022 World Cup so that ship might have sailed.
If he doesn’t indeed a that biggest of all titles will be absent from his trophy cabinet. But the fact remains – Lionel Messi, with the possible exception of Diego Mardonna, is the most fun, creative and unpredictable-with-the-ball player to ever grace the pitch.
How well do you know him?
Have you been following Lionel Messi closely? We mean REALLY closely? Do you consider yourself a true fan? Do you know, for example, his full name? (We’re not telling, and no Google!) or How old was he when he won he won his first Ballon d’Or? And many more questions (28 to be exact). Guess we’ll find out!
